Aaleicia's Story
Aaleicia’s biggest goal is to remain in what she lovingly calls her “heavenly home.” She reminds her support team of this often because staying in the home where she feels safe and comfortable means everything to her.
As a child, Aaleicia experienced frequent psychiatric hospitalizations and struggled with changes in routine, community outings, and medical appointments. For years, she relied on one trusted person she had known since childhood to accompany her to appointments because change was so difficult.
Over time, Aaleicia, her family, her behavior specialist, and her direct support staff worked together to build trust, confidence, and stability. Today, every Friday is “Girls’ Day.” She enjoys trying new restaurants, getting her nails done, attending outdoor concerts, and exploring her community—experiences she once believed were out of reach.
Aaleicia receives 24-hour Supports for Community Living (SCL) Waiver services that allow her to remain in her childhood home rather than move into a more restrictive residential setting. Each year, her family and support team advocate to maintain the level of care she needs so she can continue living safely in the home with the heavenly clouds painted on her bedroom ceiling.
A 4% reduction in Medicaid reimbursement directly impacts the trusted staff who support her every day. Consistent, specialized caregivers are essential to Aaleicia’s success. When staffing changes occur, she has historically experienced significant setbacks that have led to behavioral crises and psychiatric hospitalizations.
For Aaleicia, these services are about much more than daily support. They make it possible for her to remain in the home she loves, continue growing in her independence, and live a life filled with dignity, stability, and hope.
