The SCL Waiver helps me stay active, connected, and living the life I choose.

When Julian’s father passed away and his mother’s vision declined, the Supports for Community Living (SCL) Waiver provided the assistance he needed to remain safely at home while continuing to participate in the activities that enrich his life and keep him connected to his community.

Julian's Story

Julian lives in Lexington, Kentucky, and is a man with autism, cerebral palsy, and developmental disabilities. When his father passed away, life changed dramatically for his family. At the same time, his mother’s vision began to decline, making it increasingly difficult for her to continue serving as his full-time caregiver.

Through Kentucky’s Supports for Community Living (SCL) Waiver, Julian gained access to personal assistance staff who helped him remain active, independent, and engaged in his community while continuing to live in the home he knows and loves.

With these supports, Julian participates in Parks and Recreation programs, equine therapy, music therapy, swimming, therapeutic massage, and college classes through BCTCS. These opportunities allow him to build relationships, continue learning, stay healthy, and enjoy a high quality of life.

For Julian, the SCL Waiver is about much more than daily assistance. It provides the support he needs to remain connected to his community, pursue his interests, and continue living with dignity, independence, and purpose.

The SCL Waiver doesn’t just provide support—it creates opportunities for independence, connection, and a meaningful life.
