Paul's Story
Paul lives in Lexington, Kentucky, with a Family Home Provider through Kentucky’s Supports for Community Living (SCL) Waiver. His caregivers have become an important part of his life, helping him attend medical and dental appointments, go to church, exercise, and remain healthy and engaged in his community.
Paul also attends a day program where he enjoys coffee shops, restaurants, bookstores, weekly movies, swimming during the summer, and trips to Kings Island. With the support of his case manager, therapist, and dedicated caregivers, he has built a life filled with routine, relationships, and meaningful experiences.
Before receiving these services, Paul spent a total of approximately 13 months in a state psychiatric hospital. Today, because of the comprehensive supports provided through the SCL Waiver, he is living successfully in the community instead of an institution.
At 79 years old, Paul’s mother finds comfort in knowing that he is surrounded by caregivers who know him, care about him, and will continue supporting him in the future. For their family, these services provide not only stability today but peace of mind for tomorrow.
